6 Ways to Tap into Motivation

Take action even when you don’t feel like it.

Getting out of your head and getting out of procrastination is challenging. Often, it’s easy to overthink yourself out of taking action and staying stuck. Think about exercising, how easy is it to exercise and how easy is it not to exercise? You can get out of your own way by just getting over what’s going on inside your mind and just doing what you need to do. How do you stay motivated when you just don’t feel like taking action? Or when you have cycling thoughts of things not working out, never happening for you, or just overall hopelessness?

Here are 6 ways to stay motivated when you feel defeated:

  1. Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps: When faced with a huge and daunting task, it can be overwhelming and demotivating. Break it down into smaller, achievable steps that are attainable for you. This helps to create confidence as you start to see a sense of progress and accomplishment as you complete each step. As you continue to take small steps, you are boosting your motivation to complete that huge and daunting task.

  2. Set specific and realistic goals: Having clear goals give clear direction and purpose for taking action. Check to see that your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART goals). This helps to keep you focused and motivated as you work towards achieving them. If you need to amend your SMART goals along the way because you haven’t reached your goals, that’s ok. Keep reminding yourself of the progress that you are making and remember the lessons from your failed goals. This is key information to help you keep progressing by learning from your mistakes.

  3. Find motivation internally: Reflect on your values, passions, and long-term aspirations. Connect with the reasons as to why you wanted to get started. Remind yourself of the positive outcomes that you’ll experience once you’ve completed the task or achieved your goals. Keep visualizing your success with vivid clarity to reignite your motivation. As an example, consider this scenario. Someone told me the other day that he was having trouble with his golf swing and his follow-through every time he got onto the green. So he visualized having ease with his swing each and every night. Then when he went back to the golf course, his swing worked out and he was amazed at the power of his visualization.

  4. Create and find a supportive environment: Surround yourself with people who inspire and motivate you. Share your goals and aspirations with them, and ask for their support and encouragement. Additionally, taking the time to declutter your physical and digital workspace can create a more productive environment that minimizes distractions to help you focus and create greater efficiencies for you to work.

  5. Find more acceptance. In challenging times, it may not be easy to have the ideal work environment and that’s ok. Accept that there will be disruptions that will take your focus away due to things that you cannot control. Having that awareness to accept these situations takes a lot of patience and courage. Be kind to yourself and remember that you’re doing the best that you can with what you have.

  6. Practice self-care: Taking care of your physical and mental well-being plays a crucial role in staying motivated. Check that you’re getting enough rest, eating well, engaging in regular physical activity, and taking breaks when needed. Do your best to check in with yourself to see what you really need. Give permission to take breaks to help maintain a positive mindset and sustain your motivation.

Remember, motivation may fluctuate, and that’s normal. It’s important to accept the dips in motivation and not let them discourage you entirely. Check in with yourself to see if you can keep meeting your internal needs and if not, make the necessary adjustments. By implementing these strategies and persevering through challenging moments, you can overcome feelings of defeat and stay motivated to take action.
