The role of a career coach is to help you figure out what you want to do with your life, and then help you get there. A career coach can help you take control of your own career and gain greater clarity. Career coaches can help you with your job search, and support you with career planning and development.

If you're not sure what your dream job is, or if you're not sure how to get there, a career coach can help.

A career coach doesn't just ask questions, though. They also help you answer these questions for yourself. A coach will give you the space, freedom, and independence to explore your dream career and help you move toward it.

When looking for a career coach, knowing what you want from the relationship is important.

  • What are you hoping to get out of it?

  • How much time can you commit to your growth and development?

  • What specific kind of support do you need?

What questions should I ask my career coach?

You may be wondering what questions to ask your career coach and where to start. There are many different types of career coaches, and they all have different focus areas, so it's important to know what type of coach you’re interested in.

For example, if you're working with a career coach who is helping you identify and pursue your passions, then it's likely they'll ask you all kinds of questions about what brings you joy and how you spend your time outside of work.

If your career coach is helping you with your resume or interviewing skills, they'll want to understand more about your past jobs, who you've worked for in the past, and what skills are transferable from those jobs to the new role you'd like to pursue. It's also important for them to know what kind of environment would be most conducive to setting you up for the greatest success. For example, do you prefer working in teams or independently? Do you prefer a fast-paced environment or something more laid back?

Your coach may also want to understand where else in life besides work you feel like things are out of balance to gain a holistic perspective. Do other areas of life seem chaotic or disorganized? How can these be addressed so that they don't interfere with achieving success at work?
