Running a business

10 lessons that no one tells you about running a business

Learnings from a business owner (in no particular order).

  1. Accountability — You’re responsible for it all, from accounting all the way to sales. You wear a lot of different hats and you have to be willing to adjust/adapt to changing circumstances.

  2. Onboarding — Find a way that works to onboard new clients and adjust/amend your process along the way.

  3. Alignment — Align the values of your business with your clients. Don’t forget your needs in the midst of building your business. Check to see that the clients align with your highest values and goals. Also, check to see if they are a good fit for your business. You may want to take on clients to pay the bills even though they are not a good fit for you. Check in with yourself to see how you truly feel about working with each potential client.

  4. Set yourself up for success. You are central to the success of your business, so make sure that you are setting yourself up for success. Be honest with yourself about what you want and need to be successful.

  5. Find your niche and brand proposition (work-in-progress). Start off with a direction, test it out and refine based on feedback. Resist sabotaging yourself by waiting to have the perfect brand proposition, just get started.

  6. Take action. This is likely the most important one. Coming from a background in Advertising, I was so used to making sure that nothing goes out without being perfect. This is something that I had to ‘un-learn’ in building a business and working with start-ups. Even if there are spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, I had to learn to ‘go with it’ and amend things along the way.

  7. Spend energy doing the things that you enjoy. There are obviously going to be things that you don’t like to do and that’s fine. Focus your productive energy on taking on projects and tasks that you’re passionate about.

  8. Don’t get caught up in fear. Do your best to release your fear. Fear of uncertainty, fear of imposter syndrome, fear of not being good enough. Keep taking action and reward yourself for the things that you are doing, instead of beating yourself up for things that you are not doing.

  9. Be mindful of burnout. Pay attention to your energy. If you’re feeling down or sluggish, others can likely feel this energy. See what you can do to prevent yourself from burning out by taking breaks, connecting with those who give your support/inspiration and doing what you need to do for yourself.

  10. Provide value. Remember the value that you add and the impact that you are creating. You are making a difference with the product and/or service that you are offering, so remember to give yourself a break when you feel like you’re not ‘doing enough.’ You are doing great!
